Put your backyard to work for you by enhancing it with the concepts of permaculture.
This is a fancy new word for an old way of doing things– by mimicking nature.
At the Armstrong Education Center, we can teach you how to design your outdoor space to provide for your needs as well as those of your intimate neighbors– the wildlife!
Led by our Land Steward/Educator Krista Munger and local expert beekeeper DJ Havercamp, we will tour the working landscape of the Armstrong Center, including organic gardens, beehive, chicken coop, and composting system.
When: Sept. 7, 10am-noon.
Where: Meet at the top of the drive at the Armstrong Education Center, 1361 Old Post Road, Pound Ridge.
The Armstrong Education Center
What makes a landscape valuable to people? What makes people likely to take care of their land and its natural resources? These questions are important to the Pound Ridge Land Conservancy because, as a conservation organization, we want to inspire the land steward in everyone. We want every person to connect with what nature has to offer. This is why we created the Armstrong Education Center. (AEC)
At the AEC, we demonstrate the values of nature to the people of Northern Westchester by managing a multi-use landscape. The AEC has hiking trails, habitat protection areas, an off-the-grid, newly renovated 1912 home with cutting edge energy systems, a network of gardens that illustrate integrated local food production, and ‘outdoor classrooms’ for experiential, hands-on education. Together, these land use demonstrations illustrate the many reasons for conservation.
Our overarching objective at the Armstrong Education Center is to demonstrate that Living Lighter on the Land is possible while maintaining a comfortable 21st century lifestyle. We teach our guests that our lifestyle choices impact the natural environment while we publicly demonstrate low-impact alternatives. The AEC is the one place in Westchester County where these conversations are converging.
