Anthony Newman and the Bedford Chamber Orchestra Present Gala Holiday Performance of the Complete Brandenburg Concerti
BEDFORD, NY – Bedford Chamber Concerts presents a gala holiday concert of Johann Sebastian Bach’s six Brandenburg Concerti on Wednesday, December 11 at 8:00pm. World renowned musician, conductor and composer, Anthony Newman will lead the Bedford Chamber Orchestra in the performance.
The six works of Bach’s highly popular Brandenburg Concerti were dedicated to the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721. At the time there was no indication that this collection of pieces would become a benchmark of Baroque music and the beloved group of works that it is today. Bach, who was seeking alternate employment with the gift, received neither acknowledgment nor thanks for it.
Based on the Italian Concerto Grosso style the Brandenburg Concerti is a collection of six uniquely diverse concertos, each a masterpiece in its own right. The works feature a wide range of solo instruments, including flutes, oboes, trumpets, violins, violas, and harpsichords. At the time, Bach both reworked earlier compositions, embellishing and altering where he saw fit, and wrote original compositions that together create a cohesive collection. The dramatic arc he created through the series from the first to the last composition evokes a spirited chase and displays a lighter side of his genius.
Mr. Newman, described by Wynton Marsalis as “the high priest of Bach,†is without question one of America’s foremost Baroque interpreters. As conductor he has worked with some of the world’s finest chamber music orchestras and symphonic groups. He is Music Director for Bedford Chamber Concerts as well as Bach Works, New York’s all Bach association.
