JOHN JAY HOMESTEAD FARM MARKET KICKS OFF SECOND SEASON ON HISTORIC SITE IN KATONAH

KATONAH, N.Y. (June 1, 2012) – In its first season John Jay Homestead Farm Market saw more than 20,000 people in attendance. After a highly successful inaugural season, the John Jay Homestead Farm Market will reopen on Saturday, June 23rd and will run every Saturday through October 13. This independent market will offer fruit, produce, including heirloom varieties, and flowers grown by select local farmers, using certified organic, organic, biodynamic and conventional methods.  There will be an array of artisanal bakeries, including gluten-free, a cheese and dairy farm, a vineyard, meats and fresh seafood, prepared foods, as well as an assortment of hand-crafted condiments and local and regional products.

Shoppers of John Jay Homestead Farm Market will also enjoy 62-acres of historic grounds allowing them to sightsee and explore flower, herb and vegetable gardens, a chicken-and-egg co-op and a 12-hive apiary, along with wooded trails and a pond. This year visitors can take advantage of the Homestead guided tours offered during market hours.

Starting opening day, some of the returning vendors are Burren Farm, Conant Valley Jam, Red Barn Bakery, Mt. Kisco Seafood and Johnny Gelato. In addition, the market has expanded adding 13 new vendors including: Chutney Masala of Irvington, Doc Pickle of Paterson, NJ, Flour Power Bakery of Livingston Manor and Ronnybrook Dairy of Ancramdale.

“So many people have asked me what sets us apart from all the other farmer’s markets and my answer is still the same. We have continued to embrace and honor the small, local farmer, whose farms are literally miles from the site, and they remain the core of the John Jay Homestead Farm Market, “said Jennifer Gordon, Market Manager. The core farms include Amawalk Farm of Katonah, Amba Farm of Bedford Hills, Cabbage Hill Farm of Mount Kisco, I & Me Farms of Mount Kisco, JD Farms of Brewster, Mobius Fields of Waccabuc and Tiny Hearts Farm of Poughquag.

“We have some exciting plans for entertainment, including Les Tappan Zigues, singing cssic French songs, and the poetic lyrics of Ian Charles, “said Gordon.  The John Jay Homestead Farm Market will continue to partner with the non-profits in the community, including Katonah Museum of Art, My Second Home of Mt. Kisco and Energize Bedford/Bedford 2020.

The John Jay Homestead will offer free children’s craft programs on selected dates during the farm market hours; visit the website for details.

John Jay Homestead Farm Market is located at 400 Jay Street, in Katonah, N.Y. and will run from Saturday, June 23 – Saturday, October 13 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. For more information visit the website at http://www.johnjayhomestead.org/ or contact Jennifer Gordon at 914-232-5651 ex. 108 or marketmanager@johnjayhomestead.org.

John Jay Homestead:

John Jay’s public roles included President of the Continental Congress, second U.S. Secretary for Foreign Affairs, first Chief Justice of the United States, and second Governor of New York State.  After a long career of public service, Jay retired to a house in Katonah in 1801 to live the life of a gentleman farmer.  Jay’s descendants continued to live in the house until the 1950’s when the house and acreage were purchased by Westchester County, securing John Jay Homestead State Historic Site as both a local gem and national treasure.
