Support an Active Plan for Improving School Safety.

The Newtown tragedy has Pound Ridge parents seeking support for better security at the Elementary School. Many safety measures are being proposed, including maintaining a Police presence at the school.

Our nation’s schools should be safe havens for teaching and learning, free of crime and violence. Any instance of crime or violence at school not only affects the individuals involved, but also may disrupt the educational process and affect bystanders, the school itself, and the surrounding community. As per The National Center For Education Statistics Reports:

  • 17 homicides and 1 suicide of school-age youth (ages 5–18) at school occured July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010
  • In 2010, students ages 12–18 were victims of about 828,000 nonfatal victimizations at school
  • In 2010 there were 470,000 reported thefts
  • In 2010 there were 359,000 reported violent victimizations, 91,400 of which were serious violent victimizations
  • In 2010, a greater number of students ages 12–18 experienced total victimizations (theft and violent crime) at school than away from school.
  • In 2009 8% of students in grades 9–12 reported being threatened or injured with a weapon, such as a gun, knife, or club, on school property.
  • In 2009–10, about 74 percent of public schools recorded one or more violent incidents of crime, 16 percent recorded one or more serious violent incidents.
