The Discovery Center at Ridgefield is offering a program called ‘The Battle of Ridgefield Walk on Main Street’ on Saturday, April 27th with two start times.Â
On April 27th, we will mark the 236th Anniversary of the Battle of Ridgefield by walking along part of the battle route with Ridgefield’s own historic re-enactor and writer George Hancock as your guide. The first tour begins at 1:00 P.M. and the second at 3:00 P.M. The tour begins at the Gazebo in Ballard Park in Ridgefield.
After a detachment of 2000 British troops lead by Major General Tryon destroyed patriot supplies and then burned the town of Danbury, they thought their march back to the coast would be as easy as their march northward. However, the patriots had been mustered and skirmished with them in several locations in Ridgefield, as well as building a barricade across Main Street. The engagements resulted in the mortal wounding of a famous American general. Another (later infamous) American general led the patriots at the barricade. In the end the British made the village pay for it transgressions, but their march back to the sea was a lesson well learned. They never visited the interior of Connecticut again.
Local historic re-enactor and writer, George Hancock, will bring these facts to life in a walk from Ballard Park along Main Street and up to West Lane. Step back in time and join us for this historical look at the Revolutionary War in Ridgefield.
The program is free for Discovery Center members, and $7 for non-members. Registration is required. Visit the Discovery Center website to register (http://www.ridgefielddiscovery.org/) or call 203-438-1063. Â Â All ages are welcome!
